Understanding temperature scales
Celsius is based on water’s physical properties, with 0°C as the freezing point and 100°C as the boiling point. Fahrenheit uses 32°F and 212°F for the same reference points. Kelvin is an absolute scale used in science, starting at absolute zero and never using negative values.
What is absolute zero?
Absolute zero is the lowest possible temperature: 0 Kelvin, −273.15 °C or −459.67 °F. At this temperature, particles have minimal thermal motion. It represents a fundamental limit defined by the laws of thermodynamics.
When should you use each unit?
- Celsius is used worldwide for weather, daily life and education.
- Fahrenheit is mainly used in the United States for weather and household use.
- Kelvin is used in physics, chemistry and engineering calculations.
Did you know?
Absolute zero has never been fully reached in practice, but scientists can get extremely close using advanced cooling techniques like laser cooling and evaporative cooling.
